Application of Titanium Dioxide in Cosmetics

Titanium dioxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula TiO2. Titanium dioxide is a white solid or powder amphoteric oxide with a molecular weight of 79.866. It is non-toxic, has good opacity, whiteness and brightness, and is considered to be a white pigment with the best performance in the world today. Titanium dioxide has strong adhesion, is not easy to change chemically, and is always white, which is a common additive in many foods, personal care products and other consumer goods. As a food additive, it is usually used as an anti-caking agent or whitening agent or to enhance the color and luster of food. In cosmetics, TiO2 is mainly used in sunscreen, it can also be used in some day creams, foundation make-up and lipstick.

Practical use of Titanium Dioxide in cosmetic products

1) Titanium dioxide as a physical sunscreen: Titanium dioxide has good absorption, reflection and scattering effects on ultraviolet rays, and can block ultraviolet rays in both long wave and medium wave regions. Therefore, it is a good physical sunscreen, which can be used in sunscreen agents in the form of nanoparticles. The strong anti-ultraviolet ability of titanium dioxide and its mechanism are related to its particle size. When the particle size is large, the blocking of ultraviolet rays is mainly reflection and scattering, and it is effective for both medium wave and long wave ultraviolet rays. The sun protection mechanism is simple covering, which belongs to general physical sun protection, and the sun protection ability is weak; With the decrease of particle size, light can pass through the particle surface of titanium dioxide, and the reflection and scattering of ultraviolet light in the long wave area are not obvious, while the absorption of ultraviolet light in the medium wave area is significantly enhanced. When titanium dioxide is used as a physical sunscreen agent, the particle size is required to be small, and nano titanium dioxide is usually used. Visible light can directly pass through the titanium dioxide with small particle size, which means that it is not easy to feel whitening when applied. This is exactly what sunscreen products require. Titanium dioxide with small particle size is more suitable for use as a sunscreen.

2) Titanium dioxide as a whitening agent: Titanium dioxide is considered a kind of white pigment with good performance. It has a good whitening and covering effect in the aspect of makeup. Adding a small amount of titanium dioxide can have a good effect on even skin color and covering defects. Commonly used makeup products such as skin cream, bb cream and liquid foundation generally contain titanium dioxide. As an instant whitening ingredient, titanium dioxide is classified as a kind of colorant. At this time, titanium dioxide with large particle size is the main whitening ingredient. Although the chemical name of titanium dioxide as a whitening agent and as a sunscreen agent is titanium dioxide, it should be labeled "CI77891" because of different purposes and functions, indicating that titanium dioxide is used as a colorant.

3) Titanium dioxide as an oil absorbent: Titanium dioxide is a white powder like amphoteric oxide, which can absorb the oil secreted on the face to achieve the effect of oil control. For example, loose powder, powder, and makeup spray will add titanium dioxide as an oil absorbent. It is stable in performance, harmless to the human body and non-irritant to the skin.
