Protein Analysis in Cosmetics

Protein Analysis in CosmeticsCurrently, the use of protein-rich substances in formulations is believed to have beneficial effects. Proteins are useful ingredients that can create a suitable environment for healthy skin and hair because of their ability to bind water with the horny layer of skin and its annexes. Therefore, more and more cosmetics use protein and peptide ingredients to enhance product efficacy. Often sourced from plants, algae or fungi, these ingredients can be used in all types of cosmetics (lotions, emulsions, gels, powders). The most frequently used are vegetable proteins, including wheat gluten rice, oats, sunflower, peanuts, almonds, and soy globulins. Wheat protein is an excellent cereal protein with high elasticity when hydrated, ideal for skin moisturizing applications. Soy protein is also widely used for its gelling and emulsifying properties.

It cannot be ignored that these proteins in action may be a source of type I allergen (especially wheat protein). They are classified as "new allergens" due to possible adverse reactions (asthma, itching or anaphylactic shock) from exposure to them. Because of their potential allergenicity, the quantity and type of protein present in the raw material must be determined by accurate analytical testing.

Our Services

Creative BioMart has assembled a professional biochemical research team that can reliably detect the protein content and type in cosmetic raw materials and ingredients to help you develop or produce safe and innovative beauty products.

Testing Methods

We have introduced many analytical methods for the quantification of proteins and peptides in cosmetic raw materials, including the CBQCA (3-(4-carboxybenzoyl) quinoline-2-carboxaldehyde) method by fluorescence microplate reader and the bicinchoninic acid (BCA) assay. These methods can be applied to a wide range of samples and can measure total protein in oils, waxes, powders, aqueous, and cell solutions.

With the development of raw materials and products, more and more novel peptides and proteins are used in the cosmetic industry. For designers and producers, having a good grasp of these complex components, such as total protein content, can better support product development, raw material selection, or production quality control.

Creative BioMart is a professional cosmetic analysis company, which aims to provide comprehensive analysis, development and manufacturing support services for the cosmetics industry. Our rich experience, numerous successful cases, and powerful data analysis systems make us confident to provide customers with excellent, high quality and precise services, and help customers meet regulatory requirements while deepening the understanding of raw materials and ensuring safer products.
