Microbiological Control

Cosmetics are products of the chemical or natural origin dedicated specifically for use in skin and mucosa. Cosmetic products are recognized to be substrates for the survival and development of a large variety of microorganisms since they possess some of the nutrients that facilitate growth such as lipids, polysaccharides, alcohol, proteins, amino acids, glucosides, esteroids, peptides, and vitamins.

Many of the bacteria which come from the surrounding environment or come from raw materials are not safe. Some of the microorganisms are relatively harmless. To guarantee the quality of a cosmetic product and the safety of the consumer, it is necessary to carry out regular routine microbiological controls from every batch of the finished product before market approval. Microbiological quality control is aimed to ensure that all the finished products are free from harmful pathogenic bacteria and other bacteria are within the limit.  

Routine analyses to determine the microbiological quality of a cosmetic product include the following:

• Count of mesophilic aerobic microorganisms.
• Most probable number (MPN) of total coliforms.
• Count of molds and yeasts.
• Absence/presence of Staphylococcus aureus test.
• Absence/presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa test.

Microbiological Index

1. Aerobic plate count (APC)
2. Fungi, yeast, and mold plant count (YMPC)
3. Anaerobic plate count (use only for talcs and powders)
