Skin Sensitization Testing

Almost any product has the potential to cause dermal sensitization, or more specifically, allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Like other allergic responses, allergic contact dermatitis is divided into two phases, induction and elicitation, and depends on the induction of an immune response. Although skin sensitization is not life-threatening, they can persist for a long time and decrease quality of life. It is therefore necessary to accurately identify and characterize all products that may cause skin sensitization. A product or substance is classified as a skin sensitizer when data show that it can produce a sensitization response "in a substantial number of persons" or has "positive results in an appropriate animal test". (UNECE, 2004, p. 152).

Animal models have previously been routinely used for skin sensitization testing, but there is now significant interest in new approaches that reduce the need for animal testing or replace animals altogether. The Non-animal approaches are highly potential and offer unparalleled opportunities for toxicologists, risk assessors and regulators to work collaboratively to achieve better outcomes that protect human health than in vivo approaches.
