What is Superoxide Dismutase (SOD)?

Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is a crucial antioxidant enzyme in the human body, playing a vital role in the cellular antioxidant system. It catalyzes the conversion of harmful superoxide anion free radicals into hydrogen peroxide and oxygen, thereby protecting cells from oxidative damage. SOD comes in three forms:

• Cu/Zn-SOD (SOD1): Major cytosolic form, providing 80% of total cellular SOD activity.
• Mn-SOD (SOD2): Functions similarly to SOD1 but located in mitochondria.
• Fe-SOD (SOD3): Also similar to SOD1 but found in extracellular spaces.
