Stability Testing (Shelf Life)

Stability refers to the capacity of cosmetics to maintain their specified physical and chemical properties. Stability is an important parameter in cosmetic products. The ingredients, formulations, packaging types, and use methods of cosmetics are all decisive factors for stability testing. There are 2 different methods of stability testing, namely long-term stability and accelerated stability to determine its durability before or after opening.

• Long-term stability test:

The shelf life refers to the process by which the product can perform its initial functions by storing it under normal conditions. Cosmetics for sale must be safe for human health within the specified shelf life and under specified storage conditions.

• Accelerated stability test:  

A stability/durability study under forced conditions compared with normal storage conditions to accelerate the chemical and physical degradation of cosmetics. 

The main purpose of stability testing of finished cosmetics is to ensure that their physical, chemical, and microbiological properties, as well as their safety and functional properties, will not undergo harmful changes during transportation and storage under appropriate conditions. Similarly, compatibility tests will carry out between the ingredients and the container to ensure that the type of packaging material does not cause product quality problems.
