Application of Botanical Extract in Cosmetics

Botanical extracts in cosmetics

The active ingredients in natural cosmetics mainly come from plants, animals and microorganisms, among which the plant active ingredients are most widely used. It has been successfully applied to skin care, whitening, anti-aging and other fields. Compared with traditional cosmetics, the molecules of natural substance extracted from plants are so smaller that they are easier to be absorbed and digested by the skin, and will not deposit in the body. At the same time, the cosmetic products of plant extracts have obvious curative effect and strong pertinence. It overcomes the disadvantage that traditional cosmetics rely on chemical synthetics, and makes the product safer.

Function of botanical extracts in cosmetics

1) Whitening plant extracts: The whitening effect of arbutin is remarkable. It can quickly penetrate into the skin. Without affecting the proliferation concentration of skin cells, it can effectively inhibit the activity of tyrosinase in the skin, so as to block the formation of melanin and reduce skin pigment deposition and remove color spots and freckles. In addition, arbutin does not produce toxic, irritating, allergic and other side effects on pigment cells, and it also has skin moistening, wound healing, bactericidal and synergistic anti-inflammatory effects. Arbutin is one of the most popular whitening materials abroad. Mulberry pigment has certain antioxidant and free radical scavenging effects. Mulberry pigment extract can inhibit lipid peroxidation, improve the blood supply of the skin, nourish the skin, make the skin white, tender, and delay aging. Flavonoids, such as licorice flavonoids, which can effectively eliminate free radicals in the skin or inhibit the activities of various enzymes in the process of melanin formation, thus promoting metabolism, reducing melanin deposition and moistening the skin.

2) Anti-aging plant extracts: With the increase of free radicals in the body, the skin begins to show an aging state. Therefore, scavenging excessive free radicals in the body is an important way of anti-aging. Plant polyphenols and flavonoids are typical free radical scavengers. Common polyphenols include tea polyphenols, grape polyphenols, peel polyphenols, etc. Plant polyphenols have antioxidant, free radical elimination, and can also achieve whitening effect by absorbing ultraviolet light. By inhibiting tyrosinase and peroxidase, plant polyphenols can inhibit the secretion of melanin, reduce skin myelinizations, freckles, brown spots and age spots. Flavonoids have the function of superoxide dismutase activity and scavenging free radicals, which can repair damaged skin, resist lipid oxidation and anti-aging.

3) Moisturizing and repairing skin plant extracts: There are quite a few plant extracts with the effects of moisturizing, such as aloe, seaweed, olive, chamomile and other extracts. For example, hyaluronic acid (HA) extracted from aloe is a plant moisturizing and soothing agent. Studies have shown that the carboxyl group and other polar groups in HA molecules can form hydrogen bonds with water to combine a large amount of water, thus playing a role in water conservation in skin tissues. This water-based colloidal matrix makes the skin soft, elastic and smooth. HA can also promote the proliferation and differentiation of epidermal cells, prevent and repair skin damage.

Practical use of Botanical Extracts in cosmetic products

1) Cleaning cosmetics:Cleaning cosmetics added with plant extracts, such as cleaning cream, facial cleanser and bath liquid, can effectively remove sebum, sweat and external dust, and have strong bactericidal and surface activity. For example, aloe, witch hazel, soybean, ginkgo leaf, arbutin, angelica, chamomile, mulberry, licorice, scutellarin and other extracts. Adding mild aloe gel to soap can make skin clean without drying the skin. Hamamelis extract can quickly penetrate into the skin, deeply clean the skin, and prevent blackheads and acne. It is a good choice to add it to facial cleanser for adolescents or skin with severe oil production. The addition of soybean lecithin in shaving cream and shaving soap can soften the beard and produce small foam to prevent drying.

At the same time, it can remove free radicals in the skin, promote metabolism, and have the effects of anti-wrinkles, whitening and comprehensive improvement of skin functions.

Ginger extract, polygonum multiflora extract, mint extract, sage extract, tea saponin, bamboo extract and chrysanthemum extract are often used in hair care products, which can improve head skin, enhance hair quality, balance scalp oil, reduce dandruff or treat hair loss.
