Vegan Certification Requirements

To be considered vegan, cosmetics must meet certain requirements. First, cosmetic formulations must not contain any animal-derived ingredients, such as beeswax, lanolin or carmine. Besides that, they must not have been tested on animals at any stage of the manufacturing process. These requirements are important to ensure that cosmetics are cruelty-free and do not contribute to animal exploitation. There are two main parts to the "animal free" philosophy. The first is conservation, with a 2018 study finding that meat and dairy production is responsible for 60% of total agricultural greenhouse gas emissions, and this is just all on the dietary side.

The other part is against animal cruelty and exploitation. Therefore, the environment and ethics have prompted consumers to re-examine their dependence on animals. At present, there is no specific definition of vegan cosmetics, a product can be labeled "suitable for vegan" if the claim follows the common criteria for the justification of claims related to cosmetic products. Some labels and certifications have been created to build a framework for vegan products. They are independent and not mandatory.

Common Animal-derived Chemicals in Cosmetics:

  • Casein (sometimes listed as sodium caseinate or caseinate)
  • Oleic acid (sometimes listed as oleyl stearate, oleyl oleate or tallow)
  • Lanolin
  • Glycerine
  • Elastin
  • Stearic Acid
  • Keratin

Plant-based

Plant-based products refer to raw materials and products derived entirely from plants. It's worth mentioning that these products are not always vegan, although the terms are often used interchangeably. Because these materials may still be tested on animals, which means they are not cruelty-free and ultimately not vegan.

Process of Obtaining Vegan Certification

Obtaining vegan certification for cosmetics requires a thorough examination of the ingredients and manufacturing process. Companies must first identify all animal-derived ingredients in their products and find suitable plant-based alternatives. They must also ensure that the manufacturing process is free from animal testing. Once this is done, the company must work with a reputable certification agency to obtain certification. The certification agency will review the ingredients and manufacturing process to ensure that they meet the requirements for vegan certification.

Advantages

Vegan cosmetics have many advantages such as higher quality because they use higher quality ingredients than traditional products. They use higher-quality ingredients than traditional products, usually some plant extracts, carefully selected with high technology, which can bring better results for the skin and hair of customers. Products based on plant extracts can provide a better response and have better absorption levels than synthetic ingredients. Beyond that, choosing vegan products also contributes to the future of the planet, as we know that producing such an asset of this class involves a positive impact on the environment in the creation of the original plant. Vegan assets, especially sustainably cultivation, often help maintain green and protected areas.
